Father Finger - Temper

Fellow femme wildcard Father Finger is on tour with Maria Minerva, in anticipation of a NNF tour tape, which will apparently be for sale on the ol’ site soon.  Check out tour dates here to see if you can catch these two soon.  You can also checkout a few more minimalistic tracks from Father Finger on her SnDcLd here.  Also I think Kylie’s from Providence, RI?  Oh yeah hometown pride.

Maria Minerva - I Don’t Wanna Be Discovered (Will Happiness Find Me?)

From sophomore album, Will Happiness Find Me?

From the album description on mDhVn:

An impressively individualist mix-tape channeling the 360º spectrum of Minerva’s diverse obsessions, Will Happiness Find Me? connects the avant-pop dots between future-shock pirate radio singles, hermetic tone studies, late-night wanderlust lullabies, tape-faded club dee-lights, sampladelic vocal exploratoriums, private-press art pranks and even ambient hip-hop melancholia. Given that most contempo aesthetic arcs ebb from the raw and odd to the polished and accessible, it’s rad and uplifting to hear Minerva swimming so soulfully the other direction.

Exactly.  The sophomore LP is a total mixed bag of tricks, keeping things interesting at every turn.

Another point I’d like to expand upon: I understand many artists record rough tracks early on, maybe only out of a circumstantial inaccessibility to the tools necessary to get that polished sound, then shine it up to get that radio single sound…but it breaks my heart most times (see Best Coast, Dum Dum GirlsNite Jewel to start).

more production ≠ better recordings

Certainly some bands thrive on high end production, as I can’t imagine lo-fi Sigur Rós.  Maybe Maria Minerva isn’t a good comparison to my above mentioned disappointments being on Not Not Fun vs. a larger label like Sub Pop, but regardless its refreshing to see an emerging artist experiment with her sound, without making the immediate jump to high end pop polish.

Bravo Maria, sounds fucking great.

Maria Minerva - Will Happiness Find Me? LP is out via Not Not Fun 8/28 and is available from mDhVn here

Sapphire Slows - Animal Dreams
Not Not Fun does it again with yet another winning release.  Dark ambient keyboards & sound waves blend together to hypnotize you away from it all.
nnf:
A fresh voice is hard to find – especially in these days of such dense digital air (‘in the Shadow of the Power of Babble’ internet philosophers say). So it was with nuanced joy that we found ourselves spellbound and seduced by this young Tokyo gem-gleaner’s neon gallery of dynamic Casio nightlife masks, each of which is impeccably crafted and swathed in a fog basket of her effortlessly haunting Cocteau Twins-y shadow vox. There’s a wonderfully hushed vibe to Sapphire Slows’ most translucent tracks, beats materializing out of stray radio waves and metropolis static, electric piano memories washing away into the silent skyline of skyscrapers, synths congealing like synthetic whispers. The perfect soundtrack to urban insomniac wandering and wondering and lingering too long; almost like a Toyko take on Night Bus. True Breath is her stateside debut EP after one previous 7 inch on Big Love, and 2012 should see a full-length plus some global gigging so soak in her subtle night moves now while the breath is still warm. Black vinyl 12 inches in bilingual new wave patterned shadow portrait jackets designed by A & B Brown.

Sapphire Slows - True Breath 12” is Ltd to 500 copies & available directly here

Peaking Lights - Hey Sparrow

Hey look the video from my favorite track off of Peaking Lights936 LP.  A little girl plays in some trailer trash and creates a trashy friend of her own?  How touching.  Check out the solar panels on the house at 3:03.

I believe 936 is sold out from the original first 3 pressings at Not Not Fun correction more here, now there is yet another repress, this time from Weird World here.  The later is prob cheaper if you’re ordering outside the states.

Lee Noble - Parents

Ghastly, ghoulish, gorgeous.

His new video is all of the above, what a tease to be releasing it after its long gone.  Apologies if you missed out on Lee Noble’s OOP Horrorism LP, but it was Ltd to 300 copies from Bathetic, and gone pretty early on.  But never fear maybe you can grab a copy from good ol’ discogs after the fact.

More from Bathetic:

very, very soon
Bathetic will be releasing the full-length vinyl debut for
COUGH COOL with the record Lately
a thick waxy plate of fuzzed out bangers.
We’re very pleased to be dropping Cough Cool’s first vinyl,
their best work to date.
the Bathetic vinyl debut of one Zac Nelson (CHLL PLL, Hex Love)
entitled Sound A Sleep Sound,
two side-long floaters that are strictly cosmic.
This is a portal to an entirely different world,
quite the beaute.
also, check out mixes from
SAM GOLDBERG & WILLIAM CODY WATSON
also up on the Bathetic blog.

Definitely been a fan of COUGH COOLsince their Clausen Cassette via Not Not Fun, so I’m majorly looking forward to that new release most of all.  It any of that appeals to you, keep an eye out, Bathetic releases go quick.

Maria Minerva - A Love So Strong

Super psyched to see a new release from long time favorite Maria Minerva since her not not fun OOP Tallinn At Dawn cassette I mentioned 8 months ago

Housed in a super deluxe gold embossed sleeve, not like the 100% Silk house sleeves, this is a full on covering> Over 30 minutes of dreamy, blissfunk from Ms Minerva, pushing the album’s sound further into the sublime.

Keep your eye out for this one from 100% Silk.  Its not up for sale yet, but it’ll probably be gone quick.

Maria Minerva - Ruff Trade

Starring Maria Minerva & Xhai Middleton. Directed + edited by Joonatan Allandi.

Cabaret Cixous LP is out now on Not Not Fun, Ltd. to 700 copies on black vinyl.

Go go go <3<3<3

Maria Minerva - Lovecool

Love me some new Marina Minerva tuneage.

Taken from Maria’s forthcoming new record Cabaret Cixous, out soon on Not Not Fun.

Cough Cool - Stolen

Cough Cool immediately produces visions of early Real Estate, Ducktails, and Julian Lynch; but with their own twist.  Twenty seconds in, I’m hooked and want more.  That’s not to say anything of their excellent choice of band name or j-card art for their cassette (^^^)  The lazy, laid back summer twang of the guitar makes me long for the summer basement parties of yesteryear.

Check out their Clausen cassette on good ol’ Not Not Fun.  Ltd to 150 copies.

Peaking Lights - Amazing & Wonderful

Dig it?  From their recent LP 936 out now on vinyl/cassette via Not Not Fun here.

Wet Hair - Echo Lady

Cool kids Wet Hair have a new LP available now from De StijlWet hair has released a number of experimental vinyls via Night-People & Not Not Fun, but listening to the album now I feel that they have finally found the right combination of experimentation and accessibility.  Not Not Fun also recently released a 7” called Radiant Lines that comes with a full color pro printed 20 page artbook.  Its sold out from Not Not Fun, but if you’re lucky Midheaven has a copy left here.   This is their first LP to feature the band as a trio.  The LP also comes with an 8 page offset printed art zine by the band.

Snatch the In Vogue Spirit LP  from Wet Hair for $16 bones here.

Sorry kids, only on vinyl no lame compact discs/digital downloads ;)

Weyes Blood - Romneydale

You know a records going to be especially good when you scour the internet to only find barely a track or two streaming.  The beauty of vinyl only releases; she knows how to keep a secret.

Weyes Blood - Candy Boy

My interest has been growing in Not Not Fun has been progressively growing these days with killer limited releases from from the likes of Maria Minerva (cassette) that sell out in a flash and are hard to come by afterwards.  Their biggest release of late has got to be Peaking Lights 936, which is back in stock and Ltd to 600 copies.  Most recently my attention was drawn to the decadent Wet Hair 7” + art book release.

…a preferential suite of some of their finest (and, till now, unseen) compositions in a glossy, full-color, pro-printed 22-panel art volume, bookended by a brand new black vinyl 33 RPM single of joyously multi-hued keys/drums merry-go-rounding...a slow-motion Suicide-style sweetheart blues trance, buried vocals crooning in a gentle sea of woozy keyboard grooves.

I got into Wet Hair from their split with Naked on the Vague, and going in line with physical music and vinyl I totally dig on some well done zenes.  Ltd to one time pressing/printing of 500 copies.  Apparently they have a full length coming up this summer, so keep on a look out if you dig their tunes.

But the tune above in the (sorry) youtube video is from new kid on the block Weyes Blood, apparently sister of Raw Thrills/Greatest Hits homie Zak Mering.  She has a classical, mourning sound, and reminds me much of Angel Olson.  WellThe Outside Room LP from Weyes Blood is already out of stock with “more to come soon from NNF,” but if you can’t wait and want one of the first run Ltd to 480 black vinyl in jackets with cool screengrab/photocopied artwork by the artist, plus an 11x17 lyric sheet/mini poster

Maria Minerva - California Scheming

Another track from the most excellent and very sold out Maria Minerva Talinn at Dawn cassette via Not Not Fun that I posted on last week.  What a surprise the 100 cassettes disappeared in the past week like lightning.  You can still grab her Noble Savage 12”  from 100% Silk here.

Gotta act fast on something this good, especially cause NoT nOt FuN releases go quick, even when they’re more than 100 presses.  For anyone interested in that new Peaking Light 936 LP that has been getting a surprising amount of attention lately.  The label already sold out of the first run of 600, and is on to the second which is now available here

Maria Minerva - Disko Bliss

Highly infectious dark disco pop from Maria Minerva.  I’ve been hearing her name tossed around for some time now, and I’m sorely sorry I didn’t investigate sooner.  Many comparisons to Nite Jewel floating about, and don’t get me wrong cause I’m a big Nite Jewel fan…but this flat blows her out of the water.  It’s just much more upbeat and danceable, and I’m having trouble restraining myself as I write.  Grab this track on her Noble Savage 12” from 100% Silk here If that’s not enough (a single is never enough), more tunes can be found from Not Not Fun on her Tallinn At Dawn cassette for only $5 bones here. Cassette is limited to 150 and releases from Not Not Fun always sell out quick so hop to it.  This will make excellent roof top dance jams when winter finally dies. (see below)
