I feel like The Babies are just one of those bands that will always sound best live. This is not an anti-album statement, but a go see them live statement! If you’ve got that covered, or you have the good fortune to have snatched one of the of the Live at the Smell cassettes, then you know that they have a certain raw energy.
Our House on the Hill sounds a bit cleaned up from their debut, letting their strongest suit of lyrics shine through. That’ll happen when you switch from recording at Woods’ Rear House, to an actual LA studio. The cleanup doesn’t sound overly done as I feel happens all too often with ‘lo-fi’ bands, but just enough polish with a few new instruments backing up their core. For that I’m grateful. The new album sounds equal to stronger as a whole than their 1st, if not quite as hook filled. I spent a summer listening to the s/t record non-stop, and now listening to this one, I’m just pining for a few more warm summer days on secret beach.
Woods fails to disappoint on their 7th album from their very own Woodsist Label. That’s an album a year since 2006, with not a bad one among them. Not many other bands can produce that volume of work consistently, and I’m happy to see the recording quality of this release is exceptional to boot.
Seriously pick up a copy of the vinyl or cassette asap, the album just released yesterday.
Woods - Bend Beyond LP is available from Woodsist here as a Ltd edition vinyl packaged in a deluxe gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeve. There’s also some cassettes available too if that’s your bag.

Just got my first taste of the new Ducktails LP, III: Arcade Dynamics, and once again Matthew Mondanile produced a fantastic album brimming with easy hooks and laid back good tunes. This was exactly what I spent much of the summer blasting from my yellow boombox while lounging in the sun on secret beach or atop haunted house. The music just begs for you to relax, kick back, and think of simpler time before all this wastebookfacespace nonsense that consumed your life. Can you believe in under 2 years he’s released 3 LPs, a split, another live LP, a number of cassettes, and at least Five 7”s? Crazy buzy dude, you’d never know it from his tunes. Lay off the fb, & listen to dts.
Grab the new LP form Woodsist for bout $16 clams here. Older releases you may be able to track down from Old English Spelling Bee here.
