Memoryhouse - The Kids Were Wrong
Super psyched that the new Memoryhousefull length, The Slideshow Effect LP is finally upon us today! The kids were nice enough to put up the full album for streaming on SnDcLd here.
Memoryhouse - The Slideshow Effect LP is available from Sup Pop here. Any orders placed by the 28th receive a limited edition photo scrapbook put together by the band and of course the always lovable Loser Edition Vinyl, in this case it’s light purple vinyl.
Always great to see a talented band a couple years later make it to this point from their small beginnings on a 300 press 7”.
New track from Memoryhouse’s new debut LP, The Sideshow Effect. Denise’s vocals sound as beautiful and elegant as ever, set against soft timeless cords. Its refreshing to listen to a band that can’t be so pigeon holed into a specific genre that fits this particular decade, and for that very reason I tend to find myself gravitating toward music like this that has a certain timeless nature to it. It’s certainly contemporary, and yet it’s elegant classical nature could have put it at home in another time. Definitely a unique time when a band’s name so fits their style and music.
These kids knew what they were doing from the start. And it makes me happy to hear new music from the LP that lives up to their small start on one perfect 7” about two years ago.
“Was I sleeping while the others suffered? Am I sleeping now? Tomorrow, when I wake, or think I do, what shall I say of today…Astride of a grave and a difficult birth. Down in the hole, lingeringly, the grave-digger puts on his forceps. We have time to grow old. The air is full of our cries…At me too someone is looking, of me too someone is saying, he is sleeping, he knows nothing, let him sleep on.”
The very long awaited (and now extended) The Years EP by Memoryhouse will debut on Sub Pop on 9/13. These guys became something of an overnight phenomenon when their Lately 7” took the internet by storm. Originally only 300 copies from Inflated Records, its been repressed many times over now and you can still nab a copy.
New single from the always breathtakingly beautiful Memoryhouse. They’re finally putting out a physical EP on Subpop (big surprise), as sort of a reissue of their debut The Years EP. I say sort of because they added two new tracks including this one above and Quiet America, in addition to re-recording the original tracks to fit the record mood. Their own star wars muppet infused description of the EP is priceless:
Believe me, these weren’t added just cuz, which is to say that this isn’t like the cantina scene from the 90s Star Wars re-release where random CGI monsters are found to be co-mingling with muppets. No. This EP is still full-muppet, but will provide some insights as to where our music is heading on our RealD 3D debut. So if nothing else, take with you the understanding that re-imagining The Years was a thorough and well-considered process, one that should hopefully yield many listens as the clock inches ever closer towards our first L.P. ~mh
I treasure my Memoryhouse 7”s most highly in my collection, and while the physical release of The Years has taken entirely too long (out September 13, 2011), I’m glad they’ve done it right. Full-muppet style.
Enchanted ambient piano keys set against falling rain, typewriter punching, and sea gull squawking. Building tension while lingering and stretching out the sounds; listening I’m anxious to hear a resolution that is just always out of reach…This is the solo work of evan abeele. She released a short 22min ambient/classical piece, the Lineage E.P. and posting one song really does it little justice. Listen to the whole deal streaming via bandcamp here and purchase for 5 bones. <3<3<3 Memoryhouse + all associated side projects, and very excited to see they recently got signed by the not so small these days…well check it out below. They have an excellent blog tumblr where they avidly post song demos and other goodies that you should check out here. Can’t wait for the debut LP, been holding out on that one for far too long.
Gorgeous & other worldly new release from Swill Children. This track sounds sad with its alluring & soft lyrics yet it makes me happy. The acapella dropoff for the last 20sec just sounds like it belongs to a time half a century ago. If you like SLEEP ∞ OVER, Memoryhouse, or The Music Tapes, I’m thinkin this is for you. W-H-I-T-E / Amen Dunes Fountain 7” is limited to 300 with Three color Risograph on #20 stock. Grab the 7” here for a mere $7 bones including shipping, what a wise investment.
I know first hand what beautiful releases Swill Children put together as I stumbled upon their Lucky Dragons / Weekend 7” some time ago to my great delight, and got myself on their mailer for good measure. That release was hand numbered of 333, on cyan vinyl, which I’m enjoying right now. Grab the last copies here. Such a sucker for Lucky Dragons everything on vinyl. Swill Children specialize in elaborate experimental screen printings besides 7s and have some rad zines & posters available for you to snatch up.
This was my first introduction to W-H-I-T-E, and after only one track I cannot wait for the W-H-I-T-E, Twin Tigers 12” LP available 3/14.
I know chillwave is a dead horse; people are already sick and tired of talking about the merit of the genre, and whether it will last and all that. With that being said, I know what these tracks are, and I know what label or genre they’d fall under. But when I listen to these tracks, I hear my friends: I hear Persona La Ave and Blackbird Blackbird; I hear Memoryhouse and Aidan Knight. I hear my influences: I hear J Dilla and Madlib; I hear Baths and Star Slinger. So call it chillwave, call it beat-hop, call it whatever. Just think about what, and who, you hear when you listen to it. ~ Teen Daze
Well spoken Teen Daze. Couldn’t have said it better myself. I whole heartedly agree on the annoyance of chillwave labeling, witch house, or being labeled anything for that matter. If you like how it sounds, screw categorizing the genre, just enjoy it. Its just one step away from wasting your life rating your itunes library of 17,350 songs with those damned five stars.
<3 the Memoryhouse sampling in this track.
Download both the digital tracks, Together b/w Something, from Teen Daze’s new digital label Cultus Vibes via band camp here.
