Theo Verney - Moving Forever
Italian Beach Babes has a steady line of underrated gems over the past year, many of them on cassette, and Theo Verneycan now be added to that list. Apparently on his solo project’s debut T.V. EP cassette everything was played, recorded and produced entirely by Theo at his home studio in Brighton. Again with the Brighton. That’s a damn full sound for one dude. Live however, he has been taking to the stage with the help of a full band, which I think is really the best way to pull off the bedroom solo project live.
It’s an infinitely more entertaining live show to have a full band shredding than one person pulling off everything with equipment, loops and such. Not to say the latter isn’t impressive, or doesn’t have its place, its just not as lively.
A track about Shangri-Las lead singer Mary Weiss and her run-ins with the FBI (Mary started carrying a pistol around once someone had tried to break into her hotel room), the new 7-inch was recorded by Jerome Watson of The History of Apple Pie and Joshua Third of The Horrors in The Horrors’ studio.
Novella - Mary’s Gun 7” is Ltd to 300 copies and out 11/26 and up for pre-order now. The s/t 12” also got repressed on Lilac vinyl and you can pick both up as a package from Italian Beach Babes if you missed it the first time around.
p.s. I’m seeing Real Estate tonight (Mass Moca), Sonny & the Sunsets Monday, and hopefullyDeep Time (aka Yellowfever) Tuesday, with Useless Eaters later in the month, and prob a city run for Puro Instinct. It is a very band filled month. I’ll try n take lots of Polaroids.
Normally I’d post some new random pic from my sEcReTz archive, and even though I posted it last time, this simply beautiful album art deserves to be up again. Just received my Novella 12” in the mail today from Italian Beach Babes, and it’s better and longer playing than I would’ve imagined. The longer playing I only note, because @ a 5-track EP this baby clocks in at nearly 27min, longer than many full lengths these days. Quantity over quality never dictates, but when you get amble of both its perfect. I’m quite surprised to see this sold out all over the place including all my usual distro haunts that tend to have a copy or two after the labels out. *Update some copies remain directly from the band.* The vinyl is heavy weight 180g, with a super glossy cover art slip cover. I’d say it reminds me of early Dum Dum Girls, mostly clean sounding all girl vocals, but not overly studio polished (like in my opinion the lastest LP from Dee Dee). This is definitely gonna be on heavy summertime rotation! The vinyl came with a digital download, so that should be floating round the tubes soon enough.
Definitely keep an eye on the label; Italian Beach Babes seem to be be on a roll with 3 stellar releases including Dirty Beaches, Fear of Men, and now Novella.
Novella - s/t EP is Ltd to 300 copies on heavy weight 180g vinyl and still available from the band here.
I love everything about these chicks off of Italian Beach Babes (Fear Of Men, Dirty Beaches). The music is my ideal girl vocal driven pop punk, akin to earlier (& better) Dum Dum Girl releases. The artwork is super rad, and definitely befitting of the music. AND the song title?! Fucking brilliant, super witty. I wanna see them kick it live…
Check out more tracks on their SnDcLd here, solid, every last one.
Loving this new already sold outAlice Munro Demos Cassette from Fear of Men, and at just under 10min, it’s more a tease than anything else. I’ve just flipped the tape over for the third forth time and I can’t get enough. I keep kicking myself for missing their first cassette, but at 50 copies a piece what can you do? If you simply can’t live with some tunes from these kids, their Ritual Confession/ Spirit House 7” on Italian Beach Babes is currently available here. Not likely for long.
Full length in 2012? One can only hope. Fingers crossed.
Absolutely loving this new 7” single from Fear of Men. Recently stumbled upon these guys late to the game to pick up a copy of their recent OOP cassette on Sex Is Disgusting. It was a ridiculously short run all of 50 cassettes. Come on, I feel like any release under 100 is just a tease.
Of course if I had gotten one of the 50 I’d be all about it.
So this new Ritual Confession / Spirit House 7” is releasing from Italian Beach Babes, a micro with solid releases including some past OOP Dirty Beaches 7”s. This particular 7” doesn’t have a pressing number released, but generally they’re pretty Ltd, and this one being especially good I expect it to do well.
Fear of Men - Ritual Confession / Spirit House 7” is available here for sale. One to be gone for sure sooner than later.
Man. Apparently an upcoming LP release on Zoo Music isn’t enough for Alex Hungtai, or the man known as Dirty Beaches. A new non-LP cover of No Fun by The Stooges, being released by Italian Beach Babes, their 2nd limited Dirty Beaches 7” is to follow Golden Sun. These are vinyl, physical form, only releases. So no coping the tracks through friggin itunes. Ah the selfish pleasures of vinyl. First 100 Pre-Orders will receive Ltd Risographed version on sleeve. I hope I made the cut.
Get before its history, db is on fire, and his 7s are gold. Pre-order here.
Super lo-fi, and it just sounds exactly like it should be the soundtrack to Mystery Train. Alex has some digital stuff available on fixture-records, but to get the full effect grab the 7” from Italian Beach Babes before its gones. The sold out True Blue 7” from Zoo Music may still be available on Insound if you’re lucky.
