I’m from Barcelona - Battleships

So once upon a time in 2007 there was this cutesie pop band from that said they were from Barcelona but in fact they were a collective of up to 29 people or so from Sweden. They released an epic pop album about building tree houses, chicken pox, and collecting stamps, and it was everything good pop music should be. You should drop everything and download (no vinyl ☹) then listen to this album immediately.
The band: I’m from Barcelona
The album: Let Me Introduce My Friends
Then for a while nothing new came from them, and I just kept singing along to building tree houses and oversleeping. Then came the dreaded sophomore slump, and Who Killed Harry Houdini? was just that (of course that ones on vinyl, erg). Try as I might, I couldn’t muster any interest or appreciation for that one, and you know its bad when I take the time to remove it from the ol’ iTunes.
I calmly adapted to the fact that they had their one good album and it was all over. I even saw bits n pieces about this new supposed album and assumed the worst. But after reading one well written review via Pop Matters I gave it a download to see if it was worth my time. Success! They scrapped whatever ill fated attempts at deeper darker songs and returned to full bright pop at its best. It sounds like they picked up right where they left off 4 years ago. Apparently recorded all in two sessions, they sound happy and relaxed, as if you can tell they were enjoying every minute of this recording. With beautiful pop music, their genuine happiness and attitude spills into their music and lives shows, ultimately carrying their success.

DOM - Bowl Cut (Feat. Cults)

DOM and Ayad of Passion Pit met on Cinco de Mayo 2K10 at a show in Boston. They partied it down and decided to do a single together. A few months later Ayad, DOM and drummer Bobby were in a Brooklyn studio laying down tracks. DOM called up Madeline and Brian of Cults to come hang for the session. They recorded some vocals and group claps. Here is the result. “luv it or h8 it” – Dom.
You can grab their most excellent EP, Sun Bronzed Greek Gods here from the good ol’ boys of insound. Its a gorgeous heavy 10” record on marble violet vinyl, or at least it was when I ordered it form the band many moons ago. Funny that they’re releasing a reissue when insound still has copies of the original, but I imagine there can’t be many of those left so grab one while you can. The reissue is on white vinyl. Completely underrated album from ‘10 and among my tops, so join in on the fun.
Listen to more track via their sound cloud here, Living in America is another standout, but I Wonder is still best. That last one blew my mind last summer when I picked up a cassette from them, #10 of 12 with a j-card sleeve stamped with lobsters. I think the back story description from them was they were to be given out at a show that got busted by the cops?? Please hit me up if you know that whole story, much love. xo
Dirty Beaches - Golden Desert Sun

Super lo-fi, and it just sounds exactly like it should be the soundtrack to Mystery Train. Alex has some digital stuff available on fixture-records, but to get the full effect grab the 7” from Italian Beach Babes before its gones. The sold out True Blue 7” from Zoo Music may still be available on Insound if you’re lucky.
